Starting with Mendelssohn’s magical overture, this concert will give a joyful close to the Summer Festival. The beautiful variation on a Rococo theme by Tchaikovsky are to be heard in their original version. The version played until the 1950s was made by Wilhelm Fitzenhagen which changed some of the cello writing and omitted a whole variation. Goldmark’s charming Rustic Wedding Symphony was written in 1875 and Brahms was a great admirer of the work. The first performance in 1876 was given in Vienna and Brahms said, “That is the best thing you have done; clear-cut and faultless.”
